~~Glare and bright lights~~

Posted by D. on June 21, 1999 at 21:29:27
I posted a while back about my conditions which were retinitis pigmentosa and cystoid macula edema.  The swelling from the cystoid macula edema is nearly gone, provided that I stay on Diamox.  I am concerns and it is really bothering me that I have to deal with the onslaught of bright penetrating lights from cars (headlights that is) as well as the glare.  It is to the point that I automatically react (like to a bad experience.) Can something be done medically to help with this?  Please respond with something positive as it is bad enough to hear that there is no hope for retinitis pigmentosa itself.  Any positive feedback will greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

I am glad that the Diamox is helping your macular edema.  Regarding the glare from lights, I am not aware on any medicines which may help.  People with RP develop cataracts and if a cataract is present, it can be causing the glare.  This could be helped with surgery.  You would need to discuss the RP situation with your surgeon as cataract surgery may have a negative effect on the macular edema (possibly).
