How do they diagnose this?

Posted by Margaret on August 16, 1999 at 01:11:24
I am having vision problems.  I use to be able to take my glasses off and read great and do needlpoint.  I am nearsighted.  Now, I cannot read close as my vison is distorted and the clarity is poor.  I saw three Eye doctors and they do not have a clue.
Now, I am wondering if I could have Macular degeneration.   Also, are there various kinds of Macular problems. Treatment plan?
Thank you.

Macular degeneration is usually fairly easy to diagnose by looking at the retina after the pupils have been dilated.  Sometimes special pictures after the injection of a dye can help determine if there are any leaking blood vessels in the retina.  If you saw 3 ophthalmologists, I would be surprised if all 3 missed a significant amount of macular degeneration.
You should keep followup and see how things progress.  Did they comment on any cataract?
