How long does it take for eye stitches to dissolve?

During eye surgery, I got a stitch in my eye. It appears as a thin line, and it was red at first but is beginning to turn purple. The eye surgeon said thats a sign that it is healing. However I was wondering, doesn't the stitch just dissolve? And if so, how long does that take? And after it dissolves, does it leave any mark behind it or what? I don't quite understand how it works.

Thanks for your time,

Julia

Some stitches disolve ("absorbaable")  some don't ("non-absorbable"). The former usually disolve in a couple of weeks the others last years.
