Hypotony

by jkosaki, Jul 28, 2009 01:09PM
Just had a trabeculectomy three weeks ago and my last visit shows low eye pressure of 4 and blurry vision.  My doctor said I may need a surgery to correct that.  My question is should I wait until my eye heals completely before I have that surgery to correct low pressure.  By waiting, will I damage my eye? Will my pressure rise with medication drops?  I have a follow up visit coming up so I thought to ask for a second opinion.

What do you suggest. I will do whatever it takes to help my eye heal.

Thanks,

John

I suggest you speak with your surgeon who hopefully is a board-certified ophthalmologist that is fellowship trained in glaucoma surgery.  I think it is reasonable for your doctor to wait a certain amount of time to see if the pressure comes up on its own but it is probably not such a good idea to have the pressure down at 4 for a long time as it can cause serious problems of its own.  It's a judgement call as to when and how to try to bring the pressure up - that's what your surgeon is trained to do.
