I almost pass out when the doctor gives me eye drops, why?

Hi,
Every time I go to my eye doctor for an eye appt. they dialate my eyes. The problem is, I get really sick and almost pass out. I dont know why this is happening and I'm very concerned that something is wrong. Could i be allergic to something in the drops?

Yes you could be OR you could just be nervous and the easy fainting type.

Discuss with your ophthalmologist. We have some people like this. We try and identify what the symptoms are: rapid pulse, cold clammy skin, disorientation, etc.

It it seems its a reaction to the drops we only use one type not two, we will also try different drops. Usually this takes care of it.

We have one person that is so nervous about his eyes that if we use any drops or try to check the pressure inthe eye he faints. ("fainter" is written on his chart). In his case we don't us any drops. He understands that there is a small chance that something could be wrong with his eye that we will not be able to see because the pupil was not dilated.
