I see red dots at night.

I've been able to see them my whole life, and I remember my mom saying once that it wasn't a bad thing and that they would fade. They have faded (they used to be all over my vision, very visible, and not just in the dark), but what exactly are they? I scoured the internet and couldn't find much.

What causes them, and is there an official term for them?

I believe your red dots would fall into the catagory of "entopic" or "entoptic" phenomena. Please Google the term and read about it. The entry in www.widipedia.com is especially good.
