INFORMATION ON YELLOW TINTED IOLS

Five-year study finds no evidence that yellow-tinted IOLs provide macular protection
This prospective, randomized, double-masked study included 60 patients who received a  blue light-filtering (yellow-tinted) IOL in one eye and an a UV light-filtering (untinted) IOL in the fellow eye. After five years the IOLs performed similarly in terms of color perception and both scotopic and photopic contrast sensitivity. A detailed study of the macula did not show signs of disease that could have progressed more rapidly in the eye with the untinted IOL. Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, December 2011

Interesting, Dr. Hagan,

When I received my reStor D1 lenses a year or so ago, I was a little concerned about that yellowish tint, because I am a craftsperson who depends a lot on being able to make subtle color judgments.  My surgeon told me the tint was not sufficient to make any real difference in that department, and I am relieved to report that my color sense appears to be fine.

However, it is even better to know that the yellow tint seems to be proving itself superfluous.  Still, better to err on the side of caution with new technology, eh?
