IOL Options for hyperopia + astigmatism

IOL Options for hyperopia + astigmatism

Hi all,

I've been searching for a solution to my strong eye prescription for a few years now. My eyes are +5.75, +6.5 with 2D, 2.75D of regular astigmatism. I have thinnish corneas. My AC chamber depth is 2.7, 2.8mm. I need better vision when playing sports, during which i use contacts. I would rate my vision as merely adequate with contacts. I especially have trouble with distance.

One surgeon has offered his assessment for Custom Wavefront Lasik in two steps per eye as an option, but I don't like the risks given the strong correction, with no chance for further touch-ups.

IOL sounds like a better option, but in my experience it is nearly impossible find reliable information on the different lenses. I had an assessment done in Edmonton 2009, but was informed that no lens was available in my prescription. Recently other clinics have reviewed my assessment from 2009 and recommended that Artisan lens may be an option. Restor and "toric" lenses have also been mentioned. But these clinics all recommended a full re-assessment before providing a conclusion. That's difficult because I live thousands of miles from every IOL clinic in North America. Would anyone care to comment? I would especially like to hear from medical professionals, and patients with similar prescriptions. thanks.

The numbers you provide for your refraction are incorrect.

I would advise against LASIK.  You would need a complete exam before a recommendation can be made.

What's incorrect in my prescription? I have done a full exam at an IOL clinic. I have the full report in front of me including topography maps.

Im from the uk but they should do these lenses in ,remeber this, its not like the glossy brochures, sharp vision after, operation, thats bullcrap, you will go on a roller-coaster,of emotions, did i do the right thing, why my vision,so blurry, why my eyes so dry and sore, theres alot involved, especially after care which is most important,i went with optical express in uk they are good, had surgery done in city of manchester, then aftercare was close to home with an optical express branch, its all done by the net, they receiveyour data from manchester in a log,so they know exactly was going on with your eye which was cool,
My vision was bad after surgery with distance couldn't see after 3 meters away all blurry, just make out top line and next line out on chart, which worried me,but close up i could read quiet sharp, this improved not day by day but,2 week at a time, with the most smallest of  of changes,it took up to 3.5months to start seeing clearer ,as well as that my i eyes where sore all this time with the drops etc they give, you, and blood shot where the make incision, never thought it would go away,my vision got clear better, about 6months for me,and improved to mega sharp up to 9 months, suffered with starbursts and halos and glares they have took longer, but they are clearing up they took up to 12months easily, still to this day getting improvements, with them, night vision sharp..i would say it took at least 12 months for me to adapt with the lenses in my eye,I still felt was wearing contact lenses up to 10 months, that dry, sore, ache you get ,tightness when moving eyes left and right.now im at 12.5 months, when i look back and think what rollercoaster journey ive been on,ups and downs buts its been well worth it now at my stage, wake up in morning and see,go swimming etc,
My advice to you make sure you go with a good surgeon who works for a big company like optical express, lots of experience, and good aftercare and branch thats the most important after care, who knows every detail, about your eye and be trueful with you, even if it cost more, remember its you eyes you talking about it...go for it...and ride it out..to get a good result

Well here's an update:

I had another eye surgeon review my case file, and he wants to do a RLE with Restor. I'm likely going to decline that option given all the stories on this forum about poor performance with Restor implants.

Based on the opinion of an MD on this forum, it seems to me that monofocal strategy would be the safest option, though I am unsure if the surgeon will agree. Since I play a lot of sports, I would like to correct far and medium distance primarily. I don't have a problem wearing glasses for reading & computer work, but I would like to ensure that I can still see reasonably well at arms length so that I'm not totally dependent on reading glasses. What correction should I ask for?
