IOL power

Hi Dr. McGarity,

Thanks for your response.  If 16.0D power is correct for my blurry left eye, how come I cannot read any letters even the big E in the eye chart in my doctor’s office?  Will an IOL power of 18.0D or higher solve my current problem?  During my 3rd follow up visit, my Dr. told me that the incision has healed nicely.  My left eye is normal, no complications, no macular degeneration, no retina edema and the optic nerve is fine. The posterior capsule is clear.  When I covered my right eye, my  left eye  can see TV clearly at 6 ft.  Beyond that everything is blurry.   My left eye sees color  lighter than normal.   My dr. was much puzzled why my distant vision is so poor. That is why he referred me to his colleague for consultation.

Before surgery, my old Rx was:  OS: -2.50 -2.50x85   OD:  -4.00-2.75x95, ADD + 2.5

After surgery, the new Rx is: OS: -0.25-1.50x90    ADD +2.5.  OD: -3.50-3.25 x95   ADD +2.5.

I will see the other ophthalmologist next Friday.  Will keep you inform.

If I do surgery on my right eye, should I have the same power or higher to match my left eye?

What is your Best Corrected Vision and Current Refraction? Since your left eye vision is "clear" at 6 ft, then that's great news. This means you are slightly nearsighted. If anything, the IOL power of 16 could have been like a 15.5 or 15.0. This would have left you a little farther sighted, but you wouldn't see clearly at 6 feet.

Best wishes,
Timothy D. McGarity, Medical Doctor, Ophthalmologist.
