IOL

Hi,
I'm taking into consideration an IOL surgery and I have a doubt, which is not really a medical question, but in Italy (where I'm from) this type of surgery are very expensive and I would like to be really sure about it... :)
my question is.. are the lenses visible ?! if you talk with someone who had this surgery and you look his eyes... do you see them?!

Thanks a lot!!!!

I have an IOL in each eye, and they so small and deeply placed that they are not visible--unless you're married to a teacher of human anatomy who knows you have implants!  My husband says that in certain lights, he can tell, but no one else has ever mentioned it to me.

Hello Dr. Hagan III,

I have Marfan Syndrome, and had a dislocated lens that became detached. The lens was removed and an IOL was NOT implanted. I wear a contact lens and have 20/20 vision now in that eye. I was told there were some risks in having a new lens put in, but that it was an option to do down the line. Are you familiar with Marfan Syndrome? Is it necessary that I have an IOL implant? Does this effect the risk of retinal detachment either way?

This was 2 years ago and I was 25 years old.

Dr Hagan,

Could you please comment further on never having cataract surgery with having an IOL inserted?  My lens was removed during a RD surgery due to a complication.  I have not had an IOL implant yet, nine months later, as I have visual distortions that I do not want to make for noticeable by correcting the refraction.  But should I get a plano lens implant - is there any benefit?  Thank you.

Yes, another persona can see the reflection of your IOL depending on the light conditions and the angle this  person look at you, but it is not easy to see. Two people said to me they could see my IOL. I can`t see my own IOL (at least untill now). I remember seeing my grandmother IOL sometimes. But this is not a big deal and, assuming a good surgery outcome, your vision will improve A LOT !!!

You should never have cataract surgery without an IOL being put in the eye.
