Inflammed eye caused by contact lenses

by Pacha05, Nov 03, 2009 01:19PM
Hi

Due to wearing monthly contact lenses my eye has been inflammed and dry for over a year. The doctor has said this is because the glands that prevent moisture evapourating from the eye are inflammed, therefore not working properly. I have had steroid drops, which helped, but have caused my eye sight to deteriorate slightly. I now have some cellovisc eye drops, which wet the eye for a short period but are not helping solve the inflammation. Whenever i wear make up my eye dries up straight away and is painful, so I no longer wear it. Is there anything I can take or do other than steroid drops to help my eye get better?

Thanks

It sounds like your doctor is describing Meibomian gland dysfunction caused by overwearing contact lenses.  The first obvious point is that you should not wear contact lenses at all until this problem is improved.  Long term use of steroid eye drops has many potential side effects such as cataracts and glaucoma.  You should find an Eye MD who is interested in treating dry eye patients.  Go to the "dry eye yellow pages" (search for it) for a doctor near you.  Also you can find a very helpful on-line community at www.dryeyezone.com.

Dear Pacha05,

I would recommend that you seek the care of an eyeMD and undergo a complete eye examination including tear testing for production and break up time as well as external eye examination.  This should give you more information about your current condition and the reason for the difficulties wearing contacts.
