February 99,  I was diagnosed with the above.  For two years now I have also been treated for histoplasmosis after living a year in Tennessee.  I have at least 50% vision loss in both eyes.  Information given to me dated 1992, stated a new procedure that was being introduced dealing with a surgical operation to open the lining around the optic nerve soon after vision is loss.  Can you tell me if this is still a sucessful procedure done now or are there any new developments in treating ION?  Thank you in advance for your assistance.  Also, could you tell me what hospital/clinic/physician in the uNited States that would be the premier in treatment for my condition?  I am not finding the help I need or would like in Charlotte, NC.  Thank you
Sybil

I believe you are referring to an optic nerve sheath decompression.  A multicenter randomized clinical trial was performed which actually determined that optic nerve sheath decompression is not effective in the treatment of ischemic optic neuropathy.
For your specific case, you need to discuss treatment options with your ophthalmologist.
