Lasik and glaucoma

by Onnieellen, Oct 31, 2007 09:06AM
I recently read, after Lasik, it is problematic to check pressure for glaucoma with current equipment. Why is that true? How does the procedure change the eyes and pressure readings? How long have doctors realized this problem? Is there any research designing new equipment to combat the problem? Is POAG the most likely glaucoma to get after Lasik? What symptoms to look for? Thank you for any information you can offer......

Lasik can change the accuracy of IOP (intraocular pressure) measurements. However it is possible to diagnosis glaucoma with other instruments such as OCT, Visual Fields, disk photographs.

New equipment to mesure IOP in thick, thin and post surgery eyes is under development but is not commercially available yet.

Lasik does NOT cause glaucoma.  Primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) is the most common type of glaucoma

POAG does not cause symptoms that's one reason for an annual exam by an Eye MD Ophthalmologist physician after age 40 (every 2-3 years before).
