Lattice Degeneration, Genetic?

Lattice Degeneration, Genetic?

Posted by Mel on May 26, 1999 at 21:49:33
Hello there.  I was diasgnoed with lattice degeneration back in November of 98.  I am nearsighted. My parents did not have the disease, nor does my sister who is also myopic.  I would like to know if lattice degeneration is genetic.  If it is, what are the chances that my kids could have it when I have them.

Mel,
Lattice degeneration can be genetic and the more nearsighted you are the greater the risk of having lattice degeneration.  The inheritance is not well defined.  There are some rare diseases which have specific genetic patterns and include lattice degeneration but this is only a small fraction of lattice degeneration.
It would be reasonable for your family to be examined at some time and for you to keep followup with your ophthalmology.
