Loss of eye in accident

My husband had a nail go in his eye approximately 10 years ago.
He does not have any vision out of the eye at all.  The lense was
shattered and the muscles that control the pupil were destroyed.
Also his retina is detached.  I know that he has quite a bit of
scar tissue in the eye.  At the time of the accident they
performed several laser surgeries but they were not successful.
I am wondering what type of advancements may have been made in
this area that could help him to maybe see out of the eye again?
Or possibly a total eye replacement?  Thank you.

Jennifer,
Once an eye is so damaged that it cannot see any light, there is currently nothing which can be done to repair that eye.  Eye replacements do not exist.  There is some research being done to implant light sensitive microchips in eyes with certian types of genetic disorders (such as end stage retinitis pigmentosa)  but these implants still need further study and are not currently available.  These implants would not be of use in the situation you describe.
The only way to tell if any treatment options are available would be to have an ophthalmologist examine your husband.
This information is provided for general educational purposes only.  Please see your physician for diagnostic and treatment options.
Sincerely,
HFHS MD-NI
