MACULAR DEGENERATION REDUCED BY HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

MACULAR DEGENERATION REDUCED BY HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

Healthy lifestyle can reduce AMD risk as much as three-fold
Researchers analyzed data from 1,313 women aged 55 to 74 enrolled in the Cartenoids in Age-Related Eye Disease Study who responded to a food frequency questionnaire administered at baseline. Multivariate models showed that a healthy diet and increased physical activity were each independently associated with a significantly lower risk of early AMD. Although smoking was not independently associated with AMD, a combination of healthy diet, physical activity, and not smoking was associated with 71 percent lower odds for AMD (P < 0.001). Whereas a healthy lifestyle can offer protection against macular degeneration, some medications predispose one to it. I am thinking particularly of prednisone and inhaled steroids.

Competent Physicians use steroids only when nothing else will do, then use as little for as short of period of time as possible and educate patients on complications. There are millions of people that owe their sight and their lives to steroids (drops, shots, IV, inhaled, pills).

For some ailments, even when there are benign alternatives, inhaled steroids are prescribed routinely. For some lung ailments natural anti-inflammatories and mucolytics work just as well or better. In my case, better, and without the horrible side effects I suffered with inhaled steroids.

Smoking is horrendous for eyes and vision. Increases risk markedly of cataracts, macular degenerations, branch and central retinal vein occlusions, ischemic macular disease, intensifies glaucoma damage, reduces night vision, increases risk of embolic retinal artery diseases and visual processing due to strokes.

In the eyes smoking also: reduces night vision, increases the risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, central or brance retinal vein or artery occlusion or emboli, skin cancer of the eyelides.

It's a ticket to an early and often painful death.
