Macular Degeneration or Something Else?

This is about my left eye only. When I look at objects of normal intensity, my central vision has a thin gray cast. When I look at something very bright all I see is a roundish white glare and no definition. I checked the amsler grid and there is some, but not major, distortion in the left eye. What I don't understand is the white glare. Can anyone explain what is going on?

By the way my eye problems seem to have resulted from the long-term use of inhaled steroids for asthma. I have since continued using them. I have also developed mild cataracts in both eyes.
