Macular Hole Specialist in Ft. Worth - Dallas Area

I am desperate to find a skilled retina specialist that has had success in treating lamellar macular holes. I live in Ft. Worth, but will go anywhere.  I am a 59 year old female and have been diagnosed with lamellar macular holes in both eyes.  The specialist that I have seen says that I will lose all of my central vision and has told me to come back to see him in three months.  He told me that I could find answers to any of my questions on the internet and dismissed me from his office within five minutes of the diagnosis.  The literature that I have read says that surgery is most successful when done within the first six months.  Naturally, I'm eager to find another doctor that can answer my questions and take an interest in saving my sight.

Have you tried the Texas Retina Association in Dallas?

Full thickness macular holes are treated with vitreous surgery and any skilled retina vitreous surgeon can fix it.  Lamellar holes are not usually treated.

Dear Sunshine,
Having lamellar holes in both eyes must be truly distressing.  I have one in my left eye, and was told by my RS that he would watch it, and do surgery if it became a full thickness hole.  My symptoms in theory should not have been too bad, and I was willing to live with the lamellar hole, but further elaboration of the symptoms caused the RS to say I also have myopic macular degeneration.  As I say, whatever it is, this is a very distressing thing.   I am 57 and need to work at least 5 more years, etc. etc.  My RS said the likelihood that the lamellar hole would progress to a full thickness hole was not much, but surgery has improved and much better outcomes are available now, than even a few years ago.  This was surprising to me, since I have tried to get info via the internet, and surprise: much of it is outdated, or not really representative.  Get to a retinal clinic in a large teaching hospital.
