Miragel Scleral Buckle

by tacmom, May 22, 2009 01:02PM
I just returned from seeing my retinal specialist after 2 weeks of feeling like there was fluid behind my right eye.  This feeling went away on Wednesday, but I kept the appointment just to be safe.  The dr said that my scleral buckle in my right eye is pushing forward.  It was done by another retinal specialist who retired shortly after I had my first surgery.  Anyways, she said that it is possibly a "Miragel Scleral Buckle" and those have been discontinued.  I guess there is really no way to tell for sure what kind of buckle I have in my right eye.  She said it really is best to leave it alone, but in the event that it really starts causing problems and continues to slip even more, then they may have to surgically remove it.  I forgot to ask what happens if this does happen.  Will I have to get another scleral buckle around that eye?  Will it ruin my vision if they remove it?  I am also deaf so my vision is very precious to me.

It may need to be removed If the buckle is eroding.  You may also have a slight infection around the buckle.

It is best to try to keep the buckle in as long as possible. The incidence or recurrent retinal detachment is high if removed before 3 months.  I like to leave it in for at least one year before removal.  I have never had a redetachment for removing a buckle after one year.  You many need some steroids and antibiotics until removal.
