My 5 year old son has unexplained intermittent eye pain

I would love any information on what might cause intermittent pain in a child's eye. My healthy, normal 5 year old son started complaining of pain behind his left eye about a year ago to both me and his father. There is no pattern of when the pain occurs during the day or night, it just comes and goes anytime. Sometimes it's a low level persistent pain that he doesn't even both to mention (but if I ask, he'll tell me) and other times it's sharp and makes him cry, but that is rare. Lately he has been complaining of pain behind his right eye as well!  I have taken him to his Pediatrician, and an Ophthamologist who both cannot find any wrong or a reason why this is occuring. I do have an upcoming appointment with a Neurologist in June. Is there anyone who might be able to give me some insight on what this possibly might be? Thank you!

At his age it can be a little difficult to get a super accurate exam - so I am hopeful that as he gets older, the doctors will not only be able to get a much better exam but also a better description and history from your son.  In the meantime - it seems plausible that he has some type of cluster or migraine headache.  Diagnostic testing like MRI CT and others should be able to rule out anything dangerous.  The neurologist should be helpful especially if pediatric specialist.  Also be sure to see pediatric ophthalmololgist.  Good Luck.
