Need help

Im "someone",19. i kinda have almost the same experiences  other diplopia facing patients do,  but im not sure if they were  smokers(i started smoking when i was 16). Second half of December 2009 i got sick day by day, but at a
"I-can-handle-it" kinda way, so thats what i did, handled it.until i had slight fevers, and had headaches which gradually got worst. then got diplopia after like a week of headaches when i woke up(never had it before btw). Got admitted to a hopital, and from there on end i had  almost exactly the same experiences other diplopia patients went through, multiple MRI's, blood test, other tests., etc. visited Opthalmologists, Brain doctor, other doctors like almost 10 of them. admitted/stayed at the hospital for like 14 nights.

Now im fine, my vision and health is back to normal. But im struggling in my efforts  to quit smoking,  i know  how harmful smoking is, but i also believe that to quit smoking at the first or even first few attempts never worksfor hardcore/chain smokers.. I know that to quit smoking takes multiple attempts before actually succeeding.

I started smoking heavilly rather than lightly (25-30+ sticks or almost 2 packs of cigerette a day). for like 1 year then decreased my smoking to almost 1 pack of cigarette sometime around the beginning of '09. I wanna quit smoking. i even have a new year resolution of "Smoke-free-2010" but now i feel like ****(sorry for that). What im trying to say is, i wanna quit smoking but have to take it slowly rather than just quitting at an instant. you know what im saying? but i fear if i do that it will bring back my diplopia and headaches. honestly, for me, this is like Brutal torture  both physically and mentally if i dont smoke. What can i do?
