Neuro-ophthamologist

Hi,
I am strongly nearsighted in both eyes with lattice degeneration.  I had successful laser treatment of a retinal hole about 10 years ago.  I recently visited my retinal specialist due to a sort of throbbing shadow that sometimes appears in my vision.  His exam showed everything to be normal, and he diagnosed a "subjective visual disturbance."  He's also referred me to a "neuro-ophthamologist", which I'm not familiar with.  What does a neuro-ophthamologist do?  What sort of exam/procedures should I expect?
Many thanks for this forum,
Erik
