One of the Eye suddenly got reddish

Few years back, when my mom was washing toilet with acid.. she felt some irritation.. suddenly her one of the eye got reddish.. she went for treatment, and after some days, the eye came back to normal.

But now, the same got reddish again, after multiple check up with the eye doctor, she prescribed "Prednisolone acetate ophthalmic suspension USP" and she used for a week.. now her eyes are 70% ok. but meanwhile she was asked to take a blood test in which ERYTHROCYTE SEDIMENTATION RATE results came in 31mm.

After that doctor suggested the below tablets,

Prednisolone 40mg per day for one week..and asked to reduce each week..
shellcal 500mg twice daily
Rantac 150mg twice daily

when i researched internet, it said the Prednisolone  is a steriod and causes severe side effects

Could you please explain whether my mom's  ERYTHROCYTE SEDIMENTATION RATE - 31mm is normal or should follow the above tablets or to check other doctor.. Her age is 51. Please advice.. than you...

If you google 'normal sedimentation rate', you will see that the usual values--which vary a little from one institution to another--are about 20-29mm for women.  They can be a little higher in very elderly women.

The sed rate is an index of inflammation, often for things like allergies, certain kinds of arthritis, some autoimmune diseases and so on.  The slight elevation of your mother's sed rate indicates that she may have one of these conditions.

Prednisolone is a correct and very effective treatment for some types of allergy, inflammation, and autoimmune conditions.  The tapering decrease of the dosage your mother was given suggests that her doctors thought she was having some kind of allergic reaction.

There is nothing dangerous in this medication for the short period of time it was prescribed for your mother.  She should follow the doctor's instructions.

However, you yourself should talk with the doctor to help you understand what is going on.
