Optic Nerve damage

My father had an accident 18 years ago wherein he damaged the nerves in his eyes and therefore rendered him blind in the left eye.  I have been reading and hearing a lot of things on the web and in articles about the possibilities of repairing the eye nerves and therefore restoring sight.  I am a bit confused is this at all possible, Should I advise my father to see a dr.

Regards

Thank you very much for your reply regarding the question of my father going blind in his left eye 18 years ago due to optic nerve damage.  You said that it was unlikely that he will be able to get his vision back in his left eye.  I have read some very controversiol articles about repairing the damage to the optic nerve using stem cell research in China, is this worth looking into or is there no hope at all?

It would not hurt to have him see an Eye MD ophthalmologist. You can find one at www.aao.org  If you father has vision in his right eye he should be seeing an Eye MD at least yearly to keep from going blind totally.  It is not likely that his left eye can be helped. He should try and concentrate on saving what vision he has.
