Paedetric opthomology

by prabhu1976, Dec 29, 2008 01:57AM
Hi, i have a son of 4 year 8 months old. He used to see TV from close range and we thought he was curios. We did not have any complients from school also regarding the vision of my son.

Yesterday we just wanted to have a check and brought him to a paedetric opthomologist.
He conducted some tests and prescribed the following glass in both eyes
Spherical - 1.5
Cylindrical = -2.75
Axis = 10 and 170 left and right respectively.

I wear a class ( 1.75 spherical) 0.75 cylindrical and 90 axis on both the eyes.
I could not believe that he has such a high power.

My questions are:

1. He has been prescribed a constant use spectacles. Does this power reduce once he uses constantly and is there any other treatment methods.
2. What is the significance of cylindrical 2.75 and axis.

Thanks
Prabhu G

I doubt the refraction will decrease.  It may change.

2.75 is a moderate amount of astigmatism.

Thank you Dr.Ray.
What i understand is that spherical may change. but then astigmatism of 2.75 is a moderate amount is what you say. But then
by continus usage of spectacles, will this come down or is there  any other method of treatment.

Most like the astigmatism will not decrease.  For this age and condition no other treatment is available.  There are some pediatric ophthalmologist performing laser vision correction is there is  severe difference in refraction between the two eyes and amblyopia (lazy eye).
