Pain normal?

I had a vitrectomy and scleral buckle surgery about 7 weeks ago.  During the first few days I had severe pain and headaches.  There were specific causes for my early problems (eg increased eye pressure) and they were treatable.  Thank goodness some prescription narcotics helped the pain.  Now after 7 weeks, I will still have bouts of pain and very bad headaches.  The surgeon has checked a couple of times, and assures me everything is fine.  I have heard that some people can continue to have pain 3 months post surgery.  Has anyone had pain and/or headaches that last many weeks past surgery?

I have patients that have the same problem. Its a big big operation.

Dear Dr. Hagan:

Since my vitrectomy/ERM peel 7 days ago, no scleral buckle, no other complications so far for which I am very grateful, I have had sharp pains in different areas of surface of the eye every day.  This I am told is due to a suture that may take up to 10 more days to dissolve.  Tylenol takes the edge off but doesn't relieve pain entirely.  Feels like there are pieces of glass in my eye.  When I sleep I get relief. I am taking drops 4 x per day - Pred Forte and Zymar.

Is this a common occurrence after vitrectomy? I do not see much about pain associated with vitrectomy in the eye forum. Thank you.

Yes it is common. One of our most reliable posters JodieJ  has pain in the eye for many months and it was a small exposed suture. Exposed sutures can make for much discomfort. Some stitches do not dissolve or take many months. If you pain continues your surgeon may need to try and trim the exposed part of the suture.

You are welcome. Exposed stitches in the eye are a PAIN.  Do have it looked after.
