Post Phakic-ICL light smear/halos

Hi,

9 days ago I had surgery to insert a Visian phakic ICL into my left eye. I've previously used daily contact lenses to correct roughly -6.0 myopia.

Already the day after, my vision was startlingly clear. Very impressed. I had my post-op checkup, and we were all content with the results!

However, after 3-4 days I've developed three issues:

1)  a sector of 45 to 90 degrees of halo around bright lights. I live in northern areas, so it's very dark this time of year, I believe this might be contributing to the issue. The ring goes from about 0 to 90 degrees around light sources.

2) if lights hit me directly from the side, I see clear lines of light horizontally across my line of vision.

3) I can't be 100% sure, but it seems light is generally bleeding out. If I'm in a very bright room, such as my bath, the wall seems to glare more than on the un-treated eye.

If at all relevant, I'm using, and adhering to the dosages, Voltaren Optha and Spersadex w/Kloramfenikol drops. Spelling might vary I guess.

My doctor is on vacation & unreachable until early 2010, and I'm honestly a bit worried about this.

What is the likely cause of the problem, and can I reasonably hope this will clear up on its own?

Hopeful of answers to this, going a bit mad.

I do not have experience with this IOL.    Your doctor should have someone on call for him.

Hello Dr Oyakawa. I wish he did. However, this is a one man clinic, and as far as I know, and as i e-mailed them yesterday evening, I got an automated response saying I would get a reply on January 4th.

In any case, it is my impression that the various brands of these lenses are largely similar in function, so I still hope that at least some form of advice as to the seriousness of my condition can be assessed, based on your experience.

There is controversy regarding this IOL.  The laser PIs can cause visual disturbances.  The other problem is cataracts since this is placed in the posterior chamber.

A -6.00 is a good candidate for LASIK or PRK unless there were problems with your cornea.

Ah. I really don't like the sound of that.

My surgeon does both LASIK and ICL surgery, and he argued for ICL saying that, as ICL was an available option, he saw it as superior to LASIK all around.

I understand I'll have to try to get in touch with him asap to discuss the situation.

Thank you very much!
