Present at birth, is it a problem?

My 11 moth old daughter was born by emergency c-section after a long induced labor.  Shortly after birth we noticed what is referred to as a stork bite on her right eyelid.  It is fairly bright pink, and I understand that these are considered normal.  But the same eye that the birthmark is on seems to pull down to the outside of her face more than the other. I hope you can picture what I'm saying.  Often times after waking, this same eye will be swollen underneath and teary.  Could she possible have sustained damage during delivery? Could this all be explained by allergies? Is the birthmark on the eye just a coincidence? when she was smaller she would rub her eyes quite often..
  Thank you
dear heather-
i am glad to try to assist.  what i think you mean by "stork bite" is what is commonly called a capillary hemangioma-  a benign vascular tumor under the skin- unless it was present right from birth and then it may be what is called a flameus nevus ( port wine stain )- also a benign vascular malformation-  the former will typically reduce in appearance over several years, some disappearing altogether. the latter usually remains. also the former can in some cases if they grow to a large size may cause additional effects, such as a droopy eyelid (ptosis )- if that is what you are referring to when you say that eye is pulled down- if it is significant enough to obscure vision it may need to be treated, usually by injecting the benign tumor with steroids. regardless, neither are caused by "birth trauma"-  but it is possible for a ptosis alone to be caused by birth trauma, though unlikely.  the problem of the swollen teary eye in the morning may be a separate, common problem called a blocked tear duct.  in any event, i would recommend that your child have a complete examination from an ophthalmologist to sort all this out. i hope this helped.
key words: ptosis, tear duct obstruction, capillary hemangioma, port wine stain
