Pterigyum Surgery

by Ana__0__0, Jan 12, 1999 12:00AM

  On the past 3 years I had 4 pterigyum sergury-they didn't work.
Now I have double vision due to scar tissue. Pterigyum resection
on Nov '96,resection with B-radiation on Feb '97,resection with Mitomicyn C on May '97 and resection usin a ambiotic membrane did not solve the problem.
How can I get rid of the scar tissue, It is not allowing full movement of my eye(R). Could a "interim with prism" be a solution?
_______
As you know, pterygium surgery can be frustrating for both the patient and the physician.  The rate of recurrence is high despite the treatment used.  It sounds like prisms may be an option for you depending on the amount of restriction.  The prism may only help the double vision looking straight ahead and less effective when looking to the sides.  You may also be a candidate for eye muscle surgery, again depending on the amount of restriction.  Usually the best thing to do early on is wait to see if the amount of scarring will resolve spontaneously.  There are temporary prisms called Fresnel that can be affixed to your glasses if indeed prisms are a good option.  These are temporary as opposed to remaking your glasses.  You may want to consult a strabismus specialist (eye muscle specialist).
Good luck.  If you would like a consult at Henry Ford, please call 3139162020.
