Pterygium

Pterygium

I had eye surgery in July 2005 for a pterygium and since then I have been on and off steroid drops due to the pterygium trying to grow back. The doctor put a graft in my eye in an attempt to keep it from coming back. Now my pressure is up from the steroids and my doctor is trying to get me off the steroids, however, since she decreased the time I use the drop and the strength of the drop it is now trying to grow back. It now bothers me more than ever and I often have difficulty with reading and doing my paperwork. The doctor says I also suffer from dry eye syndrome and has scheduled putting plugs in to see if that will help. I am just wondering if there is something else that can be done for the recurrance of these growths.

Thank you.

Nothing short of more surgery. Sometimes anti-metabolites are used to try and reduce regrowth at the time of surgery. The plugs are a good idea. You might get a second opinion from a corneal specialists.

See a Eye MD ophthalmologist that specializes in cornea/external eye disease. You may need an amniotic membrane transplant/pterygium removal.
