My 41 y/o husband had a spontaneous detachment of the retina 10 weeks ago.  He has had four surgeries:  1) scleral buckle 2) vitrectomy 3) vitrectomy with silicon oil injection and removal of lens, laser repair 4) removal of additional scar tissue, silicone oil injection, laser repair.  He believes that he is losing what little sight had returned following surgery #4 again (probably another detachment).  We go to the surgeon tomorrow.  Any other options you might recommend? (I've read of tacking the retinal, etc.)  When is it time to say enough is enough?  Are there examples where this many (or more) surgeries were required to get positive results?  What happens if he does nothing (besides the obvious result of loss of vision)?  What is the likelihood of a detachment in the good eye?
FYI:  The first 3 surgeries were performed in Indiana, the 4th in Michigan.  The Indiana surgeon is doing follow-up.

This is a very difficult situation.  I agree that at some point you need to say that is enough.  This is an issue you should discuss with your ophthalmologist.  I always recommend a second opinion if it would make you feel more comfortable.  There are not many options after having so many detachments.  Last resort is the use of silicone oil to flatten the retina.  Good luck.
