Dear Doctor,
I am hoping you can tell me what is wrong with my sister's eye. She lives in another state and I don't see her very often. Approximately 2 months ago she developed a sudden blind spot in one eye. I urged her to go to the ER and she refused. A few days later it got worse and quite painful so she went to an optomostrist who took one look and sent her immediately to a retina specialist. A flourescent angiogram was done at that time. The Dr. she saw said what happened was this: she had abnormal muscles that had grown behind her eye over the years and filled with fluid. When the fluid leaked the muscles tore and it caused her sudden blind spot. He did emergency laser surgery and said unfortunately her vision will never improve and that this could happen again. Just to be on the safe side she went the following morning for an MRI of her brain and it was normal. Can you tell me what type of condition this is that she has and is it hereditary? My sister is 27 years old and in good health. Thank you very much!

leigh-
i am not sure what you are referring to when u r discussing "muscles" behind the eye -  i think u r reffering to what is called a subretinal bleed from blood vessel growth which would be quite unusual in a 27 year old-  but to go much beyond that would require me examining her-  so i cannot unfortunately completely answer your questions   good luck

sounds like my mom....unfortunately...while lasar stops the bleeding behind the eye (which this case sounds like macular degeneration)...it also can leave blind spots if the lasar is done close to the fovea which is where most vision comes from...we are going through the same thing...also pigment epitheleial detachement..anohther close relation of mac denge...no cure...frustrating..good luck
