I have a scotoma in upper center of right eye. I'm seeing a
retina specialist. He did a fluorenscein angiogram and dx it
as ischemic optic neuropathy.  Further tests revealed it to be
non-arteritic. The scotoma seems to be spreading slowly toward my
nose.  There is no treatment but I read about ginko helping this
in some cases.  Can you comment on this?  Also, would a neuro
optholmologist be able to help my condition?  This retina spec.
says no but my primary care phy. made a referal.    It's going to be October 6th before I can get in to see him.  The first opthalmologist I saw was on the day when I first discovered the
scotoma.  He dismissed it as migraine.  I saw the next retina spec. 12 days later.  I would advise everyone to get a second opinion even if your opth doesn't suggest it.

It is possible that when you presented to your first ophthalmologist your exam was normal.  The optic nerve may not begin to swell until several days later.  It is important to make sure the AION is not caused by giant cell arteritis and this can be ruled out with  a blood test.  I am sure this was done.  If it is not this, there is no treatment accept maintain good blood pressure and blood sugar control if you have problems with either.  The neuro-ophthalmologist may just be able to provide you with an additional opinion.

My blood pressure is low .  I have to walk 2 miles to get it to 140/60. Why
are doctors not concerned about low pressure?  Could this not be causing the ischemic optic neuropathy?  How can I get my blood pressure up?   Thank you for
your response.
