Re: Shadows and Ghosting

Posted By a href=mailto:***@**** Prolsdorfer/a on July 11, 1999 at 23:18:35PI am a 37-year-old male and I have just gotten my first pair of glasses.  My left eye is 20/20 but my right eye required correction.  The vision in my right eye has certainly improved immensely but now I notice a shadowing effect when I read words on the printed page or on a billboard, and when I look at a light source it seems to have a ghosting effect.  Both manifest themselves just below and slightly to the left of the original.  I would have mentioned it to the eye examiner but I wasn't aware of it because of my blurred vision.  What is the cause of this problem?  Should I go back to the doctor to have them fine-tune the prescription?  Or is this a symptom of a different eye problem?PPHR WIDTH=75% SIZE=4 COLOR=#000090

Sorry, my fault; I wasn't clear.  The shadows and ghosting problems are evident even when I'm not wearing the glasses and I'm sure the condition existed prior to my getting the glasses.  I just didn't think anything of it because I assumed it was part of the problem that necessitated my getting glasses.  I'm just wondering if this problem represents a medical condition that I should seek help with or a simple ocular problem that a "more correct" prescription should rectify.

Richard, I have experienced the ghost images and slightly askewed vision when reading especially however, it is askewed to the right side, slightly below the letter. I have had this since I received my 1st prescription glasses in 1982!!It has progressed over the years with other visual disturbances to date.  Letters look like hieroglyphic letters; when read in a sentence, it is undecipherable without correction glasses. Vertical blinds, corners of doors, or other geometric shapes cause a waver, irridescent or ghost like vision. In any case, I have been told that these particular symptoms are from a Retinal disorder where my lens is buckled, crinkly like cellophane with leaking of debris. It can be corrected surgically if necessary but if correction glasses continue to help, I would not like to undergo surgery.  Ask your opthomologist to refer you to a Retinologist to check it out! Good Luck! Elizabeth
