Last week I suddenly experienced a partial loss of vision  in
right eye.  With my left eye closed, it appears just above the
line I am reading or typing.  It appears to be fan shaped.  I
saw an  opthalmologist  immediately and he found my exam normal
and suggested it might be miagraine.  He said that it could
disappear but so far it has not.  My concern is that it it should
get larger or appear in the good eye I would not be able to see
to read.  I am 65, in good health and have never had headaches.
Should I see a neurologist?  Thank you in advance for your response.

katie-
migraines occur at all ages, but at 65, especially if you did not experience an actual headache and your visual field loss is only in one eye and still present, I would be hesitant to blame that on a simple migraine. It may very well may represent a different process, such as a lack of blood flow to that optic nerve, called an ischemic optic neuropathy.  what I suggest you do is see a neuro-ophthalmologist, an ohthalmologist specially trained in this area. If you are interested we would love to see you here at Henry Ford Eye Care Services.  Simply call 1-800-363-7575 for an appointment.  good luck.

Thank you for your prompt response.  I will immediately contact my doctor and
let him refer me to an neuro-ophtholmologist.  I do not believe we have one here
in my hometown but perhaps Memphis or Nashville, Tenn.  In the meanwhile, will
you please give me an idea of what might be going on ...in general. Am I at
risk for a stroke?.  Is this condition life threatning?  Thank you.
