Hi- Last week I went for a regular check up with my neurologist ( I have seizure disorder) and he mentioned that there was a slight change in my upper-peripheral vision.  My question is how can doctors tell if your peripheral vision is normal? It makes sense that they would be able to tell any differences but during the initial examination what are the specific ways they can tell? Thank-you for your time.  -Dawn

Dawn,
There are several ways to check peripheral vision.  The easiest way is for your doctor to have you cover one eye at a time and see how far you can see certain objects (such as counting your doctors fingers).  This can be done without any special equipment but is not as exact.  Better ways to check visual fields are "formal visual field testing".  This uses special instruments to precisely plot the visual field and can be followed for any changes.
If your doctor feels there is a change in your visual field or if it is not full, it may be useful to see an ophthalmologist and have formal visual field testing.
There are many causes of visual field changes. You would need to have these reviewed with your neurologist or ophthalmologist after a complete examination.
