My brother has a detached retina in one eye and surgery to reattach it was unsuccessful.  He is now having difficulty with his vision in the other eye and is being checked for detachment of that retina.  Would he be a good candidate for surgical reattachment if it failed in the past?  If this doesn't work he will be blind.  Please help- we are very frightened.

Certainly, we have come a long way with respect to repair of retinal detachments.  There are methods of last resort that use silicone oil or perflourocarbons to reattach the retina in difficult cases.  The problem is that the prognosis for vision is not great in these cases but it is better than doing nothing in many cases.  It is certainly recommended that he see an experienced retinal surgeon.
