Red Laser Pointer and Eye damage it can cause?

by moyelove, May 08, 2007 12:00AM
A teacher claimed he has received eye damaged because a student  pointed a small red laser(one they sale for pets on a key ring) at the back of his head and when he turned around the beam hit his eye. He wears glasses and the beam was not on his eye for more than a second because as he turned he caught the glare and walked over to ask for the pointer. Is it possible for this teacher to suffer cornea or retina damage and be placed on steroids for the brief encounter of a red laser pointer. Need solid knowledge. I read a report from the Mayo Clinic, need more information HELP.

ok  I found this on Wikipedia

Exposure to hand held laser light under such circumstances may seem trivial given the brevity of exposure, the large distances involved and beam spread of up to several metres. However, laser exposure may pose a dangerous distraction such as flash blindness.

there was more info there that might be useful, but it said that any amount of exposure can be harmful.
