Retina detachment!

by sunjay468, Nov 30, 2008 03:38AM

Hiii,

I am a patient of retina detachment and had  detachments surgeries in my both eyes. After healing of my one eye doctor decided to remove silicone oil but after remova of oil l my retina detached again then had again retinal surgery and doctor decided to leave silicone oil for lifetime in both eyes. Is it ok to have silicone oil for lifetime? When I awake my eye got red although my eye pressure looks  in  control why does it happen? I am  using 4 eye pressure drops (Alphagan, cosopt xalatan, pilocarpine 2% ) all drops twice a day. My doctor stopped me to sleep flat?

Thanks

Its better to live with silicone oil in your eye all your life than to have detached retinas.

I would suggest you see a glaucoma specialist as you are taking 5 glaucoma meds (cosopt has two medicines in it)  GENERALLY PILOCARPINE IS NOT USED IN RETINAL DETACHMENT PATIENTS. IT CAN CAUSE RD PLUS IT MAKES THE PUPIL SMALL, HARD TO DILATE AND HARD TO SEE INSIDE THE EYE.

The red eye might be due to dry eye or inflammation. Having multiple surgies can irritate the eye.
Also, w/ silicone oil you should not sleep on your back as the oil may move to the front of the eye and cause problems.
Some of the eye drops you are taking may also cause the eye to be red. You really should talk to your doctor about all the eye drops for the pressure, it is quite a lot, you may be able to control the pressure with fewer medications.

Silicone oil is often left in the eye indefintely and many people (but not all) tolerate it quite well.

Each eye is different so I would say you are luck that only one eye is red.
