Retinal Detachment

by lorac0813, May 26, 2008 09:00PM
I would like to know how common (or rare) retinal detachment is, after cataract surgery. Percentage wise, how much more at risk am I because I've had cataract surgery? Do I have to worry about every little bump on the head? I banged my head pretty hard the other day getting into my car. Need I be concerned?  I had a family member comment that retinal detachment has nothing to do with cataract surgery and that I'm no more at risk then someone who has never had their cataracts removed. True or false?

Do a google search on "retinal detachment following cataract surgery" and you should find the %s. You are more at risk for rd following cataract surgery. You can also look at the two terms in Wickipedia online.

This is an excellent article on retinal detachment. They are relatively rare. Cataract surgery dramatically increases the risk. Normal activities are fine.

Hi Dr. Hagan, thanks for the article, I will give it a read. It's good to know that normal activities should not cause rd. I will try to stop worrying needlessly but at the same time be aware of the symptoms of rd in case it ever happens. Thanks!
