Retinoblastoma, red reflex

Hi. Please see the below linked image. Photo of 22 month old boy, no fam history, no visual problems. Is the small white area in right eye, lower aspect, sufficient to warrant an exam to exclude retinoblastoma? Here is image: http://vintagetimex.homestead.com/files/discardfrequently/RedReflex.jpg
Thank you.

The boy absolutely needs to see a pediatric ophthalmologist as soon as possible.

The picture you sent fortunately is not typical of that seen with retinoblastoma but could be bilateral congential cataracts.

Please do get the boy in for proper care.

Thank you Dr Hagan. We will arrange the boy to be seen. Could the defect be, in fact, the optic disc we are looking at? Again the image is here

Thanks

No the optic nerve won't look like that unless it was markedly abnormal such as mylenated nerve fibers, staphyloma, coloboma, etc.

Let me know what the Eye MD says. The picture most closely resembles bilateral congenital cataracts. Which often do not need surgery and do not progress.
