Rezoom lens

To the quality department.

My name is Becky Rodecker. I had a ReZoom lens implanted in my left eye on 11-16-07 by Dr. S Pajka.
I can't see to read at ALL, and my distance vision is not as good as I thought it
would be.

The reason I had this surgery is because I am a riviter and welder. I was told that due to OSHA regulations I would no longer be
allowed to use my street glasses. I have used three different pair of safety
glasses in the past, and found that none of them worked for me. They did not give me the vision I needed and were very heavy on my face and caused headaches. I purchased Verilux lenses and they gave me the vision I need to do the work, were light weight
and did not give me headaches. However these are not safety lenses and I can't use them for work. Knowing I'd have to go back to the heavy safety lenses because of the OSHA regulations, I decided I wanted to rid of myself of glass all
together.

I had a family recommend Dr Pajka. He is a top surgeon. I went to him
looking for laser surgery. I had heard about it for years, and that many
improvements have been made.

After an examination it was found my
corneas were to thin for the laser surgery but I would be eligible for PRK. Dr. Pajka also explained that lens replacement was available for me, and that it is a
permanent vision correction unlike laser surgery that only lasts 5 to 10 years. I was given different choices for lens replacement, the
Crystalens and the ReZoom lens. After viewing the videos on the
different lens, I decide to go with the ReZoom lens. The video, the
pamphlet and Dr. Pajka all said the same thing, that I would have a full
range of vision. The only draw back is that this lens gives about
20 percent of the people halos when driving.  I decided to go with
the ReZoom lens and hoped I would not be one of the 20 or so percent.

I had my surgery on 11-16-07 on my left eye. The implant lens is Model
NXG1   DIOPTER 22 5D    SN4595260704   OT 13mm OB 6mm
The next day I thought I would be able to see to read, look at TV
and see to drive. Well I was able to see well enough to drive and look
at TV. However I could not even see large print. Dr. Pajka stated
that it was only the day after my surgery, that I needed to give it
more time.

During the next week  I found an odd thing. If I look down
at the paper, I could see a little of the letters off to the far
left,(about 8 to 10 inches from the center of my vision).   During the follow-up
examination a week later, I told Dr Pajka and he stated he had
never head of this. A week later I still had the dreaded halos, and I
still could not see to make good welds or rivets at work or to do my paperwork for my job. My computer screen was a blur and I couldn't see to use my cell phone. I
was in PANIC mode. What was I to do? I could no longer use my
glasses, couldn't see with the new lens and I needed to do something. I felt my only option was to have surgery on my right eye.

Dr Pajka wanted to put in another ReZoom lens. I did not want to do this
as I could not even read large print with the ReZoom lens in my left eye,  plus I had the halos. I needed to be able to SEE!  Dr Pajka stated he had never put one
ReZoom lens and one  Crystalens in the same patient. He did not know what the result would be. He stated the
Crystalens would not give me any distance vision but it could give
me the ability to read and use my computer.  I had surgery on my right eye and had the Crystal
lens implanted on 12-07-07.

Diopter 24.75  S/N : 07-254473  OPTIC DIA  5.0 mm  OVERALL DIA;

The day of my surgery I could see to read again.

It has been two months since my ReZoom lens was put in. The halos
started to decrease in the weeks after I stopped using all of the
drops and the halos are now almost gone. Can the drops possibly be the cause of the halos?

I now find I can read very
large print with the ReZoom lens. One thing I do not understand is
that SOMETIMES I can read smaller print, BUT only in that same outer
ring of my vision. I also have noticed, when I close my right eye, that I see ghost or double
images of things that are far away. The ghost or double images are only on the right side of the image. The left side has no ghost.
I find this to be odd.

I truly believe there is something wrong with the lens.

I have given it very long thought. I believe the lack of near vision
is due to one of a few things.

1. My doctor ordered and put in the wrong lens.

2. It is possible that his staff  may
have order the wrong lens in error.

3. The people at your end made a mistake and sent the wrong lens.

4. The lens was made incorrectly.

Can you help me? Is there another, better option than the ReZoom and the Crystalens in the near future? I want to be able to see without glasses. As it stands now, I'm going to have to have glasses made for distance vision.

BTW, you didn't state your age but I suspect that you may still have good uncorrected near vision.  You might look into having PRK on your second eye and replacing your ReZoom with an aspheric lens set for distance.  But please consult another experienced, board-certified cataract/refractive surgeon before proceeding.

I'm so sorry to learn about your experience.  PLEASE consider consulting another experienced, board-certified cataract surgeon.  I cringe at the thought of any surgeon letting a patient select an IOL based on the viewing of a video tape that is mostly the manufacturers' hype and propaganda.  It also seems to me that your surgeon is a little confused (ignorant?) if he really told you that the Crystalens would not provide distance vision but would give you good near and intermediate vision.  And after the terrible result of your first surgery, he now wants to implant another ReZoom--which is reputed to be the absolute WORST lens on the market.  Just say NO!

So now some of the burden of deciding what to do at this point is going to fall on you, and you will have to do your homework about the various options that are available.  And you cannot rely on the manufacturers' information about their lenses.  (They are very prejudiced!)  Take a lot of time to read through both of the eye care forums about cataract surgery and multifocal/accommodating lenses.  In your place, I'd certainly consider getting the ReZoom explanted (which should be done sooner rather than later by a surgeon who is very experienced with this procedure) and replaced with an aspheric monofocal lens.  Aspheric monofocal lenses can be set for monovision (if you are a candidate), which would give you "functional" vision at all distances without glasses.  Best of luck.  I hope that others will respond to your post with more advice.

Take the time to research the multiple problems with the ReZoom lens on this website. you can use the search feature and also review the archives. You are unlikely to find anything good about the ReZoom implant.
