I'm 32 years old and have never had any problems with my eyes, have always had 20/20 vision (except for a hemorage on my retina during a pregnancy) until this evening. While my husband was driving, I suddenly noticed I couldn't see as well, I had a blind spot to my left. The a ring started to become more clear around this blind spot. As it got bigger, it seemed like the ring was made up of dancing colored lights similar to what the outside of a prism or a diamond would look like if the sun hit it just right. I closed one eye at a time to see which one was the problem but it seemed they both had the same exact thing going on, although a bit more pronounced in the right eye. This lasted for about two hours during which time I couldn't see very clearly, I had problems with this light as well as my overall vision. After dinner, it seemed to clear up but my eyes have hurt ever since. I don't want to waste money at an eye doctor if this was just a freak thing, however if it's a sign of something more serious, I'd like to know.
This is likely a visual migraine. Please make an appointment to see an ophthalmologist for a complete exam to make sure it is not a less common but more serious problem such as a transient ischemic attack or a small stroke.
