Scleral Buckle surgery

by tacmom, May 06, 2007 12:00AM
I had this done on my right eye about 8 years ago when I was 25.  I will have it again, but this time on my left eye after two failed laser attempts to fix a retinal tear, at the end of this month.  What is the recovery period?  I have a trip planned this summer and really do not want to miss out on a white water rafting experience.

The last time was all done under an emergency situation so it is really hard to remember everything that happened.  I has just had my 2nd child who was only a few weeks old at the time.

i am 23 yrs old and i had the scleral buckle surgery about 2 months ago.  sometimes they put a gas buhble in after surgery and your vision will be very blurry and u will have to position your head down from anywhere to 2 to 6 weeks.  i didnt have to get the gas bubble done but they told me i would be able to return to all activities after 2 months.  may i ask how you got your first detachment and your current one at such a young age?  mine was because of trauma while playing basketball.

I believe it was caused by a direct blow to the top of my head.  I was stupid and not paying attention.  I was at work trying to put the money into the safe and I slid up against the wall to get up, forgetting that the temperature control box was there.  I had a really bad headache the rest of the day, but really didn't notice that I couldn't see until the next day.

One thing that bothers me, is that I vividly remember my first retinal dr telling me right after surgery (my husband and my mom remember too) that they found a tumor growing behind my eye and they had to remove it.  Because of that, they decided to check the other eye and I had another one growing.  When I tried to ask my current dr about it, she reviewed everything that the dr recorded and there is no record of a tumor behind either eye.  My old dr even went far enough to say that what I had was extremely rare and that only one in one billion people had what I had.  Maybe it is possible that I imagined it, but my mom and my husband remember him saying that too.  Unfortunately that dr has passed away so I cannot go back and ask him to verify what I was told and my current dr probably thinks I am crazy.

Hopefully they don't find anything unusual when they go in to do my scleral buckle surgery on my left eye.  I hope it is just a simple surgery.  After this, I hope there are no more problems as I will have a scleral buckle on both eyes.  One of the drs at the practice thinks I have retinal degeneration, but I sure hope not!  I am deaf as well so I really value any vision that I have!  (Deaf from birth, but I do NOT have Ushers)

Hello,
I am 32 and had a scleral buckle done two years ago.  I am now six weeks pregnant.  I heard that you you weren't supposed to give birth naturally with a buckle.  Is that true?  Thanks.
