Scleral buckle removal?

I have had scleral buckle since February 09 for second retinal detachment.  Had 3rd retinal detachment one week later.  Have had silicone retained eye since which is scheduled to be removed in October.  Since the buckle I have lost my peripheral vision in that eye. My retinal surgeon says he is pretty sure it is due to the buckle.  Are there any circumstances where the buckle is removed after a certain length of time?  If removed, is it possible for the peripheral vision to return?

I would ask for clarification from the surgeon. It's not normally the buckle that causes the problem its the retinal detachment. Buckles are usually only removed if they are cutting into the eye (intrusion) or infected. Discuss all of this with your surgeon.

This is not an operation that you can generalize about like cataract surgery. Your souce of information of necessity is your surgeon.

I had a retina tare for an unknown reason 2 years ago.  Had the cryo and  then went to the buckle then cataract surgery.  Since I have had eye/tempral/facial pain a few days a week every since.  Some days it is so sivere, I'd like to hit my head against the wall.  Tylenol and even Norco don't even touch it.  Any suggestions?  Doctor doesn't  want to remove it.

I would suggest two things:

1. See another retina surgeon to discuss causes of the pain. Ask about cutting the buckle but not removing it. It's like letting your belt out 3-4 notches it reduces pressure on the eye.
2. See a neuroophthalmologist. You need to be sure you have not developed a new problem such as facial pain syndrome (example tic doulereaux)
