Seeing colors when looking at light

Our daughter, 9 years, has told us that when she looks at artificial light, different lights either in school or at home, she sees spots of colors.  I asked her to draw what she was seeing and she drew mostly oval looking spots (two).  They seem to float around, because when I asked her to show me, I could tell she was focusing on something and tracking it.  Depending on the light that she is looking at, the colors seem to change somewhat.  She sees a purple spot and a green spot.  Have you ever heard of this?  We are concerned...

Thank you for your response.  I will have her checked by an ophthalmalogist.  She seems really bothered by this.  She told me some time ago, but could not articulate the issue very well, so I did not think too much of it.  I am familiar with floaters, as I have them, but they are not in color, more transparent with a grey outline.  She has told me she avoids looking at lights indoors, because it bothers her.  I'll have her checked.  Thanks again.

I am a board certified ophthalmologist but not the forum physician. There are a variety of harmless things that might account for your daugher's obervations including vitreous floaters, entopic phenomena (sensations that arise from the structures of the eye).

She should have a medical eye examination with dilation of the pupils but an ophthalmologist. That should identify any problems and give you peace of mind and reassurance that its nothing serious, something I cannot do without an examination.
