Seeing vein with closed eye

Once when I got up from my sleep, and looked at my hand with closed eye in comparatively dark room (with bit of light comming from outside) I was seeing the structure of my hand but rather than seeing it up as colored/black as it was dark, I saw veins/blood vessels (ie. red structure like veins) in my hand. Initially i thought I was dreaming, so I touched my finger tip with other hand I was able to it without mistake.
Later I woke up my Wife and asked her to keep finger somewhere in air, I was seeing the same vein like structure on her hand (I would say whole body, which was not covered with cloth or hair) too and I was able to touch her finger with closed eye.
I never had eye surgery. Though i were glasses. When I opened the eye later everything was back normal. I never had similar experince after that. Can someone explain what went wrong?

Hard to explain strange phenomenon when you are just waking up from sleep in a semi-dark room.  If nothing else has happened with your vision since, I would just forget about it and get a routine eye exam once a year to make sure your eyes are normal.
