Severe myopia, partial retina detachment and cataracts

by goofy1099, Mar 19, 2008 12:21PM
I am 50 with severe myopia - since birth.  I had a partial retina detachment 25 years ago and 2 small tears - one in each eye over the past 15 years - last one 8 years ago. My night vision has gotten bad and the doctor advised i have a cateract in each eye.  He can correct this but wants sign off from my retina specialist due to my past isssues.  Can you advise the increased risk for detachment due to cateract surgery
thanks

Cataract surgery, even successful surgery, raises the risk by 10 times, not 10% for non-severe myopia 1 in 5 000 before cataract surgery to 1 in 500 after surgery. Higher in high myopes.
