Sharp, stabbing headaches that last only a few seconds to a few hours

Posted By Sharon on July 21, 1999 at 13:24:17
I'm not a headache sufferer by nature (VERY RARE).  But in the last month I've been getting sharp, stabbing headaches on the left side of my head just above and behind my temple that started out just lasting a few seconds, then dissipating and leaving a kind of warm feeling where the pain had been.
Well, in the last 3 days these headaches are lasting for a few hours with the pain being dull one moment, then becoming very sharp again.  The pain also sometimes travels to other parts of my head (on the right side in the back), but almost ALWAYS starts where I first described.  I did read one message that sounded similiar to what I'm describing and am wondering if this too could be a cluster headache, although I haven't noticed any further symptoms except for the pain (no eye drooping, etc) and wonder if this could still be considered a cluster headache.
What causes cluster headaches?  Stress? As I stated, I don't get headaches, so when this started happening, it concerned me (although I haven't seen my doctor yet--didn't think a headache was serious enough to schedule an appt).
Thanks very much for your help!
