Silicone Oil Long Term Effects

Silicone Oil Long Term Effects

Posted by JL on June 22, 1999 at 09:08:08
After several different tries at treatments to keep my retina from detaching after blunt trama (hit in the eye with a bungee cord), I had silicone oil place in my eye last August. The retina has stayed stable since them.  I have a cataract (also from the trauma) that is developing and my doctor is saying that it may be ready to be removed by December, and that he would probably remove the oil at the same time.  Is there any information on the long term effect of leaving the oil in the eye instead of removing it?

Sometimes it is necessary to keep silicone oil in the eye on a longterm basis.  It can be associated with glaucoma, retinal problems and corneal problems.  In most cases, the oil is removed once the retina has stabalized and the risk of recurrent retinal detachment is lower.  However, there is always the possibility of the retina detaching once the oil is out.  You need to discuss the risks benefits and alternatives to the different treatments in your specific case with your ophthalmologist prior to surgery.
